Maury Gortemiller’s work springs from the contested cultural geography of the South, where the ghosts of history, politics, religion and antediluvian notions of gender bristle against a changing economic order. Raised on the Texas Gulf Coast, he holds graduate degrees in Southern Studies and Photography. Maury is currently a Lecturer of Photography at the University of North Carolina-Asheville.
