Mitchell was born in Memphis, TN, 1944, and lives and works in Atlanta, GA. She taught twenty-nine years in the Visual Arts Department of Emory University. She holds a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art (1968), did post-graduate work in Rome, Italy, and received her MFA from Georgia State University (1977).
Mitchell works abstractly in drawing and painting and has exhibited in museums and galleries, including The American Academy and Institute of Arts & Letters in New York, 1979, the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D. C., 1996, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center (solo), 2005, and the Factory, Kunst Halle Krems (solo), Austria, 2006. She has work in numerous private and public collections, including those of the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the J. B. Speed Museum, Louisville, KY, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Atlanta, the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock, the Ulmer Museum of Art in Ulm, Germany, Agnes Scott College, the Telfair Museum of Art in Savannah, GA, and the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University. A Fellow of The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts & Sciences, Mitchell has received numerous awards and grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Arts Federation Fellowship in Painting, 1992, Emory University Research Committee Grants, 2000 and 2006. In 2000, she completed a five-year project designing 15,000 sq. ft. of ceramic tile murals for a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority station.
In 2007, Mitchell had at Atlanta’s City Gallery East a major retrospective spanning 32 years with catalogue. She is represented in Atlanta by Sandler Hudson Gallery.
With the exception of short periods in Europe and New York, Mitchell has always lived in the South. She feels a strong identity with the land: the Mississippi delta, and the river itself, as well as the mountains of North Georgia. At core she is a Southerner.
