I went to school at Boston University where I had many excellent teachers including John Wilson, James Weeks and Philip Guston. I received my MFA degree in 1977. I have been exhibiting my work since 1980 in Boston, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, in both galleries and museums. I have received more than my share of grants and awards including the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Fellowship. Most recently, Boston University gave me a Distinguished Alumnus Award. My work can be seen at the Alpha Gallery in Boston and at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington as part of the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, both running currently. I have been teaching at the College of Charleston, Charleston, SC since 1993.

I don’t use any visual reference in my work. By that I mean, I don’t work from life, from any motif or use photography, ever. This is a small point but, at least as of today, an important one for me. Living and working in South Carolina has certainly allowed me time to pursue my own work, and for that I am grateful. Having said that, Charleston has had no direct influence on my painting but all experience, good or bad, where I live and what I see, is naturally part of what I do.
