(Born in Memphis, TN; Lives and Works in Boston, MA)

Brian Bishop’s paintings attempt to pinpoint the overlap between opposites such as the intangible and the tangible, the conceptual and the visceral, the forgotten and the remembered. His work investigates the intersection of the public and private by employing the rhetoric of surveillance in his depiction of intimate encounters and spaces. His southern identity informs his work through its simultaneous embrace and rejection of nostalgia.

Bishop attended the School of Visual Arts in New York; earned a BFA from Memphis College of Art, and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has exhibited his work at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution; The University of Delaware; Agnes Scott College; Cheekwood Museum of Art; The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art and Georgetown University. He is an Assistant Professor of Art at Framingham State College in Massachusetts.
