Bonnie Melton grew up in North Carolina. After college she left the Piedmont to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In 1989 she moved back to the South and presently lives in Durham, NC. Of her work she says “When I lived in the city I started painting remembered landscapes, internalized images of the remembered rural landscape. I was construing my paintings through memory. Now, back in this in-filled, sub-divided South I realize the effect of living in an urban area for many years; the effect of layering, accumulation, elimination, and traces of a long lived-in city. Each of these places affects how, and sometimes what, I paint.”
