Yellowhammer Press - Contemporary Southern Art, Literature, and Culture

About

Southern art and literature have long been marginalized as what’s known as folk art, and often outsider or primitive art. While a great deal of traditional Southern culture is rightly categorized as such, large numbers of artists and writers today are creating contemporary works of art and literature that are not best seen in these terms. While certainly impacted by the Southern environment in which they find themselves, the work produced may not seem explicitly Southern according to the traditional definition. Is it still Southern? Yellowhammer Press is interested in exploring the intersection between Southern culture as we’ve always known it and its impact on Southern writers and artists today.

Our aim is simple: to create an online cultural hub for the South. Here, you’ll be able to read artist and writer profiles, art and literature reviews, and any Southern-related tidbit that we find interesting. We’ll be updating frequently, so please bookmark us. We invite submissions, suggestions, tips, and comments – simply email us.

Yellowhammer Press was founded by Ryan Galloway and Brannon Woods in 2009. A Southern writer and Southern artist, we got tired of wondering why googling “contemporary Southern art” yields almost no relevant results, and decided this must be indicative of both the current perception of Southern art as well as a complete lack of online resources. We set out to change both counts, and hope that our readers will enjoy.
